Rana Hamdy

Rana Hamdy is an experienced American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter, educator, and accessibility advocate whose work focuses on expanding access to Islamic knowledge, learning, and community life for Deaf and hard-of-hearing Muslims. She earned her Master of Arts from Huron University in 2025, completing a thesis on Deaf Muslims’ Inclusion in Religious Spaces: Islamic Legal Analysis of Accountability and Communal Obligation.

Rana teaches at George Brown Polytechnic in both the ASL and Deaf Studies Program and the Honours Bachelor of Interpretation (ASL–English) Program, where she contributes to the development of future interpreters and professionals working with Deaf communities. Her work is grounded in the belief that access to language and communication is essential to meaningful participation in faith, education, and community.

Beyond her academic and professional work, Rana has supported humanitarian missions with Deaf Defy, helping provide local sign language access for Deaf and hard-of-hearing children and families in refugee camps and areas affected by conflict. She is also a co-founding member of Deaf Muslims of Canada (DMC), where she advocates for equitable access to Islamic learning, supports community initiatives, and helps develop accessible ASL resources for Deaf Muslim communities.
